1. Air It Out
First, the most obvious thing you can do is simply air the mattress topper out. Once the mattress topper is home, remove all of the extra plastic and wrapping surrounding the mattress topper. Either open all of the windows where the mattress topper is located (with a fan to help ventilate the room properly) or place the topper outside in a convenient location to help endorse the fresh outdoor smell. This will speed up the process of removing the chemical smell from the mattress topper.
2. Baking Soda
Baking soda is an excellent source and common household cleaning tool for removing smells. In fact, most people use baking soda in their refrigerators and freezers to keep them from becoming too smelly from leftover food. There are a couple of different methods for using baking soda as a powerful deodorizer.
The first thing you can try is just too simply put baking soda on the memory foam mattress topper in powder form (sprinkle it on and then rub it into the topper).Let it sit and soak up the smell.Vacuum it clean after about 10-20 minutes (rotate the topper and do this to the other side).
Another option is to add vinegar to baking soda with a little bit of water in a spray bottle. Squirt this on the entire mattress topper while a fan is running for ventilation purposes, to help reduce the smell. Do this a couple of times throughout the first day or two of owning the mattress topper to help cut down on thepolyurethane chemical smell.
3. Baby Powder
Baby powder can be used just like baking soda in powder form. Sprinkle it all over the memory foam topper allowing it to sit for a good 10-20 minutes before vacuuming it up. Rotate the mattress topper to the other side and do the same thing.
4. Charcoal
This might be an odd solution to some people, but charcoal is an excellent absorption chemical. Set2 to 3 bowls on top of your new memory foam mattress topper. Fill each bowl with a bunch of charcoal while allowing a fan to help ventilate the room (leave the windows open if you can). This will help absolve the smell issue.
5. Lemon Juice
Lemon juice is a fantastic idea for airing out the nasty smell from your new memory foam mattress topper. Put about a 50/50 concoction of the two in a spray bottle. Spray the mattress topper on both sides and use your hair dryer to dry it out. The best option might be to use this outside, if at all possible.Allow the fresh air to be the best drying solution.
6. Vinegar
Vinegar breaks down bacteria removing the odor left behind. It is a clear liquid that does not leave any type of marking and the smell it leaves goes away within in minutes. Utilizing distilled white vinegar with some kind of enzymatic cleaner that you can buy from the store on your new memory foam mattress topper will help break down the smell from the manufacturing. Use a 50/50 combination in a spray bottle and spray it on both sides of the mattress topper.
7. Rubbing Alcohol
Rubbing alcohol is an effective way to clean memory foam because of its disinfecting powers; however, it is also a very useful chemical at breaking down the awful smell that emits from a brand new topper as well. Spray rubbing alcohol on both sides of the mattress topper.
Each of these solutions are used quite often and have been proven to work even if it is the slightest bit helpful at removing the smell from new memory foam mattress toppers.
